Divine right of kings - A political concept which basically proclaims that the existing social and political order is directly ordained by God and to challenge any part of it is tantamount to challenging the divine will. According to this concept the king was responsible to God alone and representative bodies, such as the Parliament, were assigned a status no higher than that of a purely consultative body, which could be dissolved at any time if the king willed so.
